Wood Furniture Repair

wood furniture repairIn these woodworking videos, I will be providing specific step-by-step procedures for wood furniture repair which includes chairs, tables, benches and drawers. I'm starting out with two wooodworking videos that deal with a broken chair. The first deals with wooden chair repair for a dining room chair and the second for kitchen chair repair. Although I'll be using different woodworking tools and techniques for fixing chairs, tables, benches and drawers in these current woodworking videos and others to come, there are certain basic furniture repair rules that you can use for all of them such as:

  • Glue is really the only proper substance for holding furniture together; however, there are a few exceptions to the rule.

A certain furniture style may be designed to be held together with nails or screws. Some chair arms are held to the backrest by screw joints. And, small finishing nails are used to hold drawers together.

  • The best rule is to repair the piece before it is totally broken.

The pressure of use on loose joints is usually the cause of most breaks. And, as loose joints get worse with use, the problem gets bigger and bigger. Catch the loose joint as early as possible to keep major repairs to a minimum.

  • Before making any wood furniture repair, take off the old glue.

Putting new glue on old glue is useless because it will not hold. Glue attaches itself to wood by soaking in and adhering to the wood fibers. A small paint scrapper, a knife, or chisel are good tools to use to take off the old glue. Just don't take off any wood with the glue or you won't have a good fit when re- gluing.

  • Use the proper glue!

Using white or yellow wood glue will work for most wood furniture repair. White sets in around 15 minutes opposed to the yellow which has a working time of 8 to 10 minutes and is stronger and resists moisture more than the white.

There is also a liquid hide glue available now that comes in a ready-to-use bottle. This liquid requires no mixing, heating or stirring. Professional woodworkers it for its long assembly time (does not set for almost 30 minutes so it's great for chairs!), exceptional strength and unique crackling effect on wood.It also provides superior creep-resistance, offers excellent sandability and is unaffected by finishes. Its sensitivity to moisture allows for easy disassembly of parts.
