At first glance you might think that installing garbage disposal may be too much to handle. Well, it is not. Installing a garbage disposal is a step by step process that takes a little thinking and planning. If you are replacing a garbage disposal that is rusted to a stop or buying a garbage disposal that has more power, then garbage disposal installation will not be difficult for you.
First go to the circuit breaker box and turn off the circuit breaker that is marked garbage disposal.
Turn on the switch and make sure it doesn't run.
After that, disconnect the plumbing. Then disconnect the wires from the the bottom of the old disposal.
Remove the old disposal and the new one will install on the old attachment ring.
Next, connect the wires to the bottom of the new disposal and then the plumbing.
After connecting the plumbing, run lots of water to make sure none of the fittings are leaking.
Also, remember to go to the circuit breaker box to turn the circuit breaker back on.
Turn on the wall switch and make sure that the new disposal runs.
If need to install a garbage disposal where there wasn't one before, you will need to do more work. Also, you will need an extra pair of hands from the top when you put in the new drain top. Someone will have to hold it in place firmly while you snap the retaining ring from under the sink. You might have to buy some pipe and fittings to get the new installation hooked up.
What I like to do in that case is make a drawing of what is existing and what I think I will need. Take that drawing to your Home Depot or your favorite plumbing supply place and have them help you get the right plastic pipe and fittings. Be prepared with a hacksaw because you might have to trim some of the pipe to fit. We have broken the video down into segments so that you can step through the process.
Financially, doing this project yourself is rewarding because plumbers in my area charge as much as $125 for installation! So you're saving a good bit of money!
